So, you’ve bought a DSLR (or any camera with manual functions) and you are still at the mercy of the automatic functions which stifle your creativity…

Have you reached the point where you’d like to improve your photographs?

  • Maybe you want to be able to take better pictures of your kids or family:
  • Maybe you want to start shooting weddings or engagements
  • Maybe you want better travel photographs or landscapes
  • Maybe you want to just know what you are capable of with your camera in general
  • The aim of this workshop is to teach you the basics of photography, how your camera works and to stop it being the barrier between you and something amazing.

Here’s what we’re going to do:

  •  We’re going to talk about the exposure triangle that is Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO.
  • We’re going to explain these,  teach you how to quantify them and show you how they interact
  • We’ll discuss their creative properties and their limitations and then we’ll bring them all together so you can get the exposure you want.

After that we will talk about proper composition and getting your images tack sharp before we move on to gear:

  1. Lenses and how to choose the best one
  2. Tripods
  3. Flash
  4. Filters for balancing and polarising light

This isn’t a Photoshop or a Lightroom workshop although we will touch on workflow.  We are going to help you push your camera to the limit of what it is capable so that if you want to take your images into editing software you’ll have the very best starting point.

This is a workshop about learning your camera and how to produce in-camera artistry

Most of the things that we’ll be talking about are not fixable or even possible in Photoshop so they have to be done at the time you capture the image.  They are, however, essential in producing a great image.

Pending agreement and scheduling, we will have a printing industry professional give a 30 minute talk on how to best present your images for printing.  Another great chance to ask questions!

After this course you’ll have a much better understanding of photography, your camera, your options.  This will enable you to bring your creativity to life without tech hinderance.  We’ll demystify your DSLR and transfer the power to you.

Join us over a day and a half, in a comfortable, relaxed environment where you’ll receive expert tuition, presentations, handouts, cheat sheets and lunch (first day only).  You’ll get a chance to ask all the questions you ever wanted.  Also included will be an optional night shoot on the first day and a sunrise shoot on the second day where we will guide you through all the things we talked about in the workshop.  This will be a great opportunity to practice your new skills.  We'll be going to dinner too on the night of the first day so join us for this to continue the discussion. (cost of dinner not included).

To register, please drop us a line by filling  in the form below and we'll send you the registration documents.

Required:

  • DSLR Camera or at very least a camera with manual capabilities is recommended so that we can guide you through some of the course material.  If you don't have a camera and just want to make an informed choice when you get one, you are still welcome!
  • Knowledge of how to find the manual settings on your camera.  We'll teach you how to use them.
  • Tripod.  This is essential for long exposure sessions.
  • ND and polarising filters if you have any

We look forward to you joining us!
